Adding, Editing, and Removing Users in the WordPress Dashboard
Adding a New User:
- Log into Your WordPress Dashboard: Access your website’s admin area by navigating to
yourwebsite.com/wp-admin
and entering your login credentials. - Navigate to Users: On the left-hand sidebar, click on "Users" > "Add New."
- Fill in User Details: Enter the required details such as First Name, Last Name, Username, Email Address. Choose a password or let WordPress generate one for you.
- Set Role and Capabilities: Select an appropriate role from the dropdown menu (e.g., Administrator, Editor, Author, Contributor, Subscriber).
- Add User Description (Optional): Provide additional information about the user in the "Biographical Info" section if desired.
- Send Account Notification Email (Optional): Check this box to send an email notification to the new user with their login details.
- Create New User: Click on “Add New User” at the bottom of the page to create the account.
Editing an Existing User:
- Navigate to Users: From the dashboard, go to "Users" > "All Users."
- Select a User to Edit: Find and click on the name or “Edit” link next to the user you want to modify.
- Update User Details: Make changes to any of the details such as Name, Email Address, Role, etc. You can also change their password by entering a new one in the "New Password" field if desired.
- Edit User Description (Optional): Update biographical information under the “Biographical Info” section.
- Save Changes: Click on the "Update Profile and Role" button to save your changes.
Removing a User:
- Navigate to Users: Go to "Users" > "All Users."
- Select a User to Delete: Locate the user you wish to delete and click on “Delete” next to their name or in the dropdown menu under their profile picture/avatar.
- Choose Deletion Method: You have two options:
- Delete User: This removes the user from your site entirely.
- Demote User: Promotes one of their posts as an administrator and then deletes the account, which is useful if they are the last admin.
- Confirm Deletion: If you choose to delete the user completely, you will be prompted to confirm this action. Click "Yes, Delete" to proceed.
By following these steps, you can effectively manage users within your WordPress site, ensuring that only authorized individuals have access and appropriate permissions.
